How to Iron Embroidered Patches onto Football Shirts

🌡️ Quick Reference Guide

Pressing Method Temperature (°C) Front Press (Positioning) Inside-Out Press (Main Bond) Pressure Level
Professional Heat Press 140°C – 145°C 10 – 12 seconds 20 – 25 seconds Medium-High (4 bar)
Household Iron ~140°C (Polyester/2 Dots) 15 seconds 30 seconds Very Heavy (Full body weight)

🏭 Method 1: Professional Heat Press

  1. Set Machine Parameters: Set your heat press to 140°C – 145°C and adjust the pressure to Medium-High.

  2. Pre-press the Jersey: Place the polyester shirt flat on the bed and press for 3 seconds using a Teflon sheet to eliminate moisture and wrinkles.

  3. Position & Cover: Align the thick embroidered patch in place and cover it with a Teflon sheet to protect the polyester fabric from heat shine.

  4. Step 1 — Front Tack (10–12 Seconds): Clamp down the press. This initial pass sets the patch in position, though thick embroidery acts as an insulator preventing full glue melt.

  5. Step 2 — Inside-Out Main Bond (20–25 Seconds): Flip the jersey inside out. Cover the back of the patch area with a Teflon sheet and press again. Heating from the inside allows thermal energy to pass straight through the thin polyester fabric directly into the adhesive.

  6. Cool Down: Remove from the heat press and allow the garment to rest flat until completely cold before handling.

🏠 Method 2: Household Iron

  1. Iron & Surface Prep: Set the iron to Polyester / Synthetic (~140°C or 2 Dots). Turn steam 100% OFF and empty the water tank. Place a solid wooden board or tabletop underneath the shirt—do not use a padded ironing board.

  2. Pre-iron Area: Iron the target sleeve or chest area for 3 seconds to flatten the polyester.

  3. Position & Cover: Place the patch on the jersey and cover it with parchment paper or a thin cotton cloth (never touch bare iron to polyester).

  4. Step 1 — Front Tack (15 Seconds): Press the iron straight down vertically with firm downward force. Do NOT move or slide the iron back and forth, as this distorts synthetic fibers.

  5. Step 2 — Inside-Out Main Bond (30 Seconds): Flip the jersey inside out. Cover the back of the patch area with parchment paper and apply full downward body-weight pressure for 30 seconds to fully melt the glue into the fabric matrix.

  6. Set Under Weight: Leave the shirt lying completely flat and place a heavy flat book over the patch area for 5 minutes while the adhesive cools and hardens.

💡 Pro Tip: Thick embroidered patches are rigid and heavy. On smooth polyester shirts, heat glue alone can loosen after 15–20 wash cycles. Adding 3 or 4 discreet corner stitches (safety stitch) after ironing will guarantee the patch never detaches.
